Author of seventeen books and editor of eight others, and having written over four hundred scholarly articles, Deirdre McCloskey is well known internationally in economics, economic history, rhetorical theory, philosophy of science, statistical theory, gender studies, and other fields. She describes herself now as a "postmodern free-market quantitative Episcopalian feminist Aristotelian female Austrian economist who was once a man." Her latest books are Bourgeois Equality: How Ideas, Not Capital or Institutions, Enriched the World (the third in the trilogy The Bourgeois Era; 2016), Bourgeois Dignity: Why Economics Can’t Explain the Modern World (the second, 2010); and The Bourgeois Virtues: Ethics for an Age of Commerce (2006). Before The Bourgeois Era, her best-known books were The Rhetoric of Economics (1st ed. 1985; 2nd ed. 1998) and Crossing: A Memoir (1999), a New York Times Notable Book.
