Director of Transportation Policy
Robert Poole is director of transportation policy and Searle Freedom Trust Transportation Fellow at Reason Foundation, which he launched in 1978. His 1980 book Cutting Back City Hall was the first book-length examination of privatization. He advised the White House Office of Policy Development during the Reagan years and testified before the President’s Commission on Privatization in 1987. During the George H.W. Bush administration, he helped develop an executive order on infrastructure privatization. In 1992, he served on the Vice President’s Space Policy Advisory Board. In 1994 he assisted the Clinton DOT with its proposal for a U.S. air traffic control corporation and was one of the first to propose privatization of the air traffic control system. He released two books this year: Rethinking America’s Highways: A 21st-century Vision for Better Infrastructure and A Think Tank for Liberty: A Personal History of Reason Foundation, America’s Most Influential Libertarian Think Tank.
